If you are tired of the usual vacation destinations like Canada and Mexico, come see Antarctica. In the past few years, an increased number of people have chosen to come see this dark, frozen continent. We may study Antarctica as school children, but as we age, we somehow forget about the icy continent.

Starting out in New York, this specific travel program, flies tourists to Buenos Aires or Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina, and then on to the city that is the furthest south on the planet. After a brief period of respite and touring, an Argentine Navy transport -- complete with tugboat and icebreaker -- will take you to your final destination via the Drake Passage. Known as the fiercest stretch of sea in the world, the Drake Passage spans the 600 mile stretch between the bottom of South America and Antarctica.

In early sailing times, any seaman who had lived through the passage could put one foot on the table when dinner was over. Furthermore, if his travels had taken him as far as crossing the Antarctic Circle, then he was allowed to both of his feet up on the table! This particular tradition is still carried out to this day, and depends on the amount of port consumed.

A brave traveler who ventures all the way through to Antarctica can do more than just chip off some ice for a drink or say hello to the penguins. The Antarctic tour also makes stops at several U.S. and Argentine scientific stations that are set up to survey marine life, glacial biology, meteorology and earth movements. Needless to say, visitors find both the scientists and crews that run these stations to be very knowledgeable and quite hospitable people.

You can even have the chance to conduct some research, too. You'll get to choose from many differing topics. While studying the Antarctic water, tourists may see that it holds more organic matter than water from anywhere else in the world. After spending the night on the ship, tourists are taken to their excursion sites the next morning. The season of winter in the US And summer in Antarctica happen at the same time. Summer temperatures in Antarctica may reach a balmy thirty degrees above zero, but the wind chill is remarkably cool. Snow pants, parkas and mittens are provided to tourists to help them stay warm.

On this tour, you can even come face to face with some of the most elusive wildlife in the world. Sea leopards, elephant seals and penguins are just a few of the animals you will encounter. Another unusual offering is trips to whale graveyards as well. The overweight charges on baggage for the return flights leaving Buenos Aires can be steep. So the group is strongly encouraged not to take home any giant whale vertebrae as a souvenir of their time in Antarctica.
