Class A RV Owners Disappointed by State Park Closures
States across the country are closing state parks. However, the one state that has been featured in the news most recently is Arizona. As people sick of winter are heading south, they may find concession stands closed and state parks deserted. Closures are a result of government overspending in past years attempting to find ways to remedy their debts through budget cuts.
The result: four parks did not escape closure, however many more have been left in the care of townspeople. Other states however, have followed Arizona's move and begun closure of their state parks. Class A RV owners will find themselves heading to new destinations where they dont have to fear running into closures.
New York's decision to close 80 parks was justified by Governor David A. Patterson's reasoning that if money has to be pulled from educational institutions, medical institutions and retirement homes, then state parks must also be added to the list. What the Governor failed to see is State Parks bring in funding not only to the state but also to individual localities that depend on tourist dollars. While there must be sacrifices made, there may be better venues.
Across the country in California, Governor Schwarzenegger thought closing state parks would be an easy way to save some money. However, Californian's love of the outdoors became apparent when protests were sparked across the state. One such protest had people finishing a 260-mile hike from Bakersfield to Sacramento. The goal is to preserve California's future.
Millions of people head out to enjoy their state parks every year. All that visiting brings in tourism dollars to the tune of $255 million. Money from state parks goes to pay taxes and helps local economies.
State Parks cater to adventurers and Class A RV enthusiasts fit the bill. They also fit the bill of big spending. The investment they made in their vehicle shows they are serious about travel and about luxury. Two key ingredients for tourism dollars.
While facing park closures may feel like a blow to Class A RV owners hitting the road, there are other states and other parks to visit. However, it may cost the parks more than a few dollars this year, they may potentially lose the interest their park once garnered.
Exploring the beauty of this country is part of the RVing way of life. It's a part of our heritage and in the end, parks - whether they are state or government owned - are the land of the people. Setting up entrance fees only helps ensure the park's protection for future generations.
